Blockade - action against G8 summit in St.Petersburg

Press release
Today in the morning around 30 people who are involved in the Network Against G8 (NAG8) blockaded the entrance of a hotel which is used by participants of the G8 summit in St. Petersburg. They blockaded the street for a while, carried banners, distributed leaflets against the policy of G8 and made noise with a trumpet and by shouting slogans like "No G8 anywhere" and "it is the end of G8 as we know it" in Russian and English.

The action had international character as anarchists and anticapitalists from different European cities like St. Petersburg, Moscow, Minsk, Chishinau, Warsaw, Kiev, Cardiff and Berlin took part. The action was planned to show that there is protest and resistance to G8 no matter where it takes place. Police reacted with a clash on the action, everybody was arrested, some of the activists sat down and were carried away, others were brutally graped and forced to leave the street.

Laws are not made by the people who have to cope with them in the end but by those in power.
The blockade of the street and protest which violated these laws is a response to the repressive situation in the city of St. Petersburg, where everyone who does not fit in the picture that the Russian officials and the G8 supporters are trying to create is criminalized.

The G8 as an institution strengthens the role of the elite countries in the worldwide market and promotes hierarchy. It makes decisions for millions of people and interferes with libertarian and selforganised relations between people. The member countries make decisions about direct and hidden wars.

There is an urgent need to take action against the G8 summit. The protest is taking place all over the world. The growing movement of resistance against those in power can not be stopped in Russia or anywhere else by tough police or a president who denies peoples right to say no to this elite club. Today's intervention with a direct action against the G8 summit is another step not to demand but to work on what is needed - to shut down the G8.

According to the latest information, in the 28 police station there are between 31 and 36 arrested, among them 8 citizens of the former USSR and 8 from other foreign countries.

Journalists are conceded a Potemkins protest

According to Rosbalt, yesterday, some journalists linked to Oxfam International held a protest against G8 policies.
On July 15, they put up masks with the faces of G8 leaders and lined up in front of a menue which proposed for breakfast, lunch and dinner only - crude oil.
The action, organised by Oxfam, intended to call on G8 leaders to put the fight against poverty in the first place, not the dividing up of oil resources.

Security forces watched the action closely without interfering. As it turned out, it has been officially allowed by the vice director of the presidential PR department. Journalists observing the action assumed this was done to show to media representatives how democratic a country Russia is.

At OVD 38, where the activists arrested today at the hotel blockade are detained, people now get taken fingerprints and photographed by people in civilian clothing - UPOB officers. One of the arrested, a journalist and participant of the Network against G8 demanded legal support, but was told that he had a right to a lawyer only in court. When he said that he knows the law and insisted in contacting a lawyer they started to threaten him that he would be released the last, would be put in the worst prison cell and so on. Lawyers are not allowed into the department.

Some of the detained activists that blocaded Nevsky prospect were brought to the court of Kujbyshevsky district of Petersburg, address Karavannaya street, 20. They are blaimed in not following the legal demand of police officer (Article 19.3).

12 people have been just now arrsted at the anti-war picket in Petersbug. They were taken to the 79 police station, address Gagarinskaya street 6a, phone +7 (812) 579-97-12.

2 German bike caravan participants deported to Estonia

Last night an SMS was received from the two German participants of the bike caravan that had been arrested last Sunday. They reported that they had been released and deported from Russia right away. Henning and Eike are now in Narva, Estonia.

Massive Repression am G8 Gipfel

Berichten aus St. Petersburg zufolge kommt es zu massiver Repression gegen AktivistInnen. So wird offensichtlich versucht, jeglichen Protest möglichst zu verhindern. Mittlerweile gibt es auch einige Berichte über Misshandlungen und Gewalt auf den Polizeistationen. Es wurde zu internationalen Solidaritätsaktionen aufgerufen.
Das Legal Team berichtet mittlerweile über zahlreiche Fälle, von denen einige genauer benannt werden. So wurde eine der OrganisatorInnen des Russian Social Forum und eine weitere Person nach der Verhaftung auf der Polizeistation geschlagen. Den beiden und einer weiteren Person wird "Gewalt gegen die Polizei" vorgeworfen, wofür eine Höchststrafe von fünf Jahren Gefängnis droht. Während die Frau vom RSF und einer der beiden Männer bereits frei gelassen wurden, wird der andere Mann wahrscheinlich 48 Stunden festgehalten.

Doch dies ist nur ein kleiner Einblick in die Repression, die sich in den vergangen Tagen und Wochen mehr und mehr zuspitzte. So wurden z.B. die Leute am Sociaforum, das in einem Stadium etwas außerhalb der Stadt abehalten wird, dort eingesperrt. Eine Riesenaufgebot von Beamten mit Anti-Terror-Ausrüstung fuhr rund um das Stadium auf und die Ausgänge wurden einfach geschlossen. Es durften nur noch Leute rein.

Außerdem wird auf Demonstrationen, die sich bilden, massiv eingebrügelt. Es kommt immer wieder zu Verhaftungen. Die Leute werden auf die Polizeistation mitgenommen, erkennungsdienstlich behandlet (Fingerabdrücke usw) und in manchen Fällen sofort angeklagt. So wurden schon mehrere Leute zu Haftstrafen (bis zu ca. zehn Tagen) verurteilt. Es wurden auch schon einige AktivistInnen abgeschoben, wie zwei Leute aus Deutschland, die schon im Vorfeld des Gipfels verahftet und dann in einem Schnellverfahren verutreilt worden sind.

Doch viele Leute schafften es nicht einmal bis St. Petersburg. Sie wurden an der Einreise nach Russland gehindert. Oder am Weg zum Gipfel abgefangen. Vielen Leuten aus Russland wurden im Vorfeld "Besuche" von der Polizei abgestattet. Auch hier gab es massive Einschüchterungen, Gewalt und auch Verhaftungen.

Blockade-Aktion gegen G8 in Petersburg

Am Sonntagmorgen gab es in Petersburg vor einem Hotel, in dem Delegierte naechtigen, eine kurze Verkehrsblockade.
Um halb neun morgens stuermten mehrere Dutzend G8-GegnerInnen mit Transparenten, Flugblaettern und Laerminstrumenten auf die Strasse vor einem der Hotels, in dem G8-Delegierte untergebracht sind. Es gelang ihnen fuer mehrere Minuten den Verkehr auf der Prachtstrasse Nevski Prospekt aufzuhalten. Sie entrollten Transparente und riefen Parolen gegen den Gipfel auf englisch und russisch. Die an dieser Ecke vielfach praesente Polizei und Sicherheitskraefte (z. B. die Spezialeinheit OMON) war sichtlich ueberrascht, rannte aber sofort auf die Protestierenden zu und versuchte sie von der Strasse zu zerren. Einige gingen zu einer Sitzblockade ueber und liessen sich wegtragen, andere wurden ebenso brutal auf den Gehweg gebracht. Offenbar wurden die meisten verhaftet und an der Seite des Hotels in einen Gefangenenbus verfrachtet, wobei noch lange Parolen gerufen wurden. Die Aktion erregte auf der recht belebten Strasse einige Aufmerksamkeit, PassantInnen blieben stehen und sahen sich das Geschehen an. Die Flugblaetter jedoch wurden sofort von Muellarbeitern weggekehrt.
Unter den AktivistInnen waren einige internationale Leute, z. B. aus England, Deutschland, Moldavien und der Ukraine.
Es ist noch unklar, wie lange die Leute im Knast bleiben muessen. Achtet auf weitere Informationen und werdet aktiv!

Heute früh wurden in Russland mehrere ausländische Aktivisten festgenommen, weil sie versuchten Delegierte an der Fahrt zum Tagungsort des G8-Gipfels in Strelna zu verhindern. Darunter sind Menschen aus den Niederlanden, Großbritannien, Deutschland und Polen. Sie werden gerade festgehalten in der Polizeistation (Marat Street 79, phone +7 (812)764-28-02). Russische Aktivisten rufen zu weiteren internationalen Solidaritätsaktionen auf und schlagen vor, öffentlich Druck auf Russische Botschaften zu machen. Heute wird gegen 16.00 eine Kundgebung vor der Russischen Botschaft in Berlin stattfinden.

Überblick über globale Solidaritäts-Aktionen anlässlich des G8-Protestes

Am Freitag und Samstag haben in Hamburg, Köln, Berlin, Lüneburg, Oldenburg, Frankfurt/ Main, Bremen, Heidelberg, Rosenheim, London, Salzburg, Göteburg und vielen französischen wie auch us-amerikanischen Städten Aktionen in Solidarität mit den Demonstranten in St. Petersburg stattgefunden. Mit den Aktionen sollte zum einen deutlich gemacht werden, dass international ein Auge auf den Repressionsapparat in Russland geworfen wird und zum anderen gezeigt werden: "Eine andere Welt ist möglich!".
Am Freitag fand in Berlin eine spontan organisierte Demonstration vor der russischen Botschaft statt (http://presse.gipfelsoli.de). Heute wird es eine Demonstration durch die Berliner Innenstadt anlässlich des G8-Gipfels in St. Petersburg geben (http://www.kapitalismus-abschalten.de.vu/) In Göteburg, Schweden, haben Demonstranten ebenfalls vor der Botschaft eine Kundgebung abgehalten (http://goteborg.suf.cc/).
In London haben Demonstranten das "Russian Chamber of Commerce" besetzt und ein Transparent mit der Forderung nach einem Ende der Repression in Russland, aus dem Fenster gehängt. Die Polizei hat die Demonstration gewaltsam aufgelöst und zwei Personen wurden festgenommen (http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2006/07/345106.html) In Hamburg haben 300 Personen an einer Anti-G8 "Reclaim the Streets-Party" teilgenommen und ihre Unterstützung mit den Protesten in Russland zum Ausdruck gebracht. 11 July environmentalists were arrested and in St. Petersburg

Environmentalists were arrested and kicked in St. Petersburg near Medny Vsadnik
Today in St. Petersburg were arrested 13 activists of the action against the transportation in Russia of the nuclear wastes, also co-chairman of "Ecozashita" Vladimir Slivyak and activist of "Bellona" Vera Ponomareva. Christina Rakityanskaya, who worked there as a journalist from "Ecology and law", was also arrested. All of the arrested are in the 1st police department of the Admiralteysky region of St. Petersburg.
The environmentalists from GROZA, Ekozaschita and Bellona presented in front of the monument of Medny Vsadnik (an official symbol of Russia in G8) a banner, saying "No to the importation of the nuclear wastes".
The members of riot squad, who arrived there in advance, arrested the participants of the meeting within few minutes. One of the arrested was harmed, she asked for a medical care, but wasn't given an adequate medical care.
Vladimir Slivyak didn't participate in the meeting, but was accused of "suspicion in terrorism".
The reason for the demonstration was the information about an agreement between the RF and the US, which allows transportation and storage on the territory of the RF thousand of tones of nuclear wastes. It is expected that the head of the Governments will announce it during the G8 summit.
"I think, that Russia can be proud for young activists, who performed against the dirty deal. They are true citizens", - said Rebecca Harms to the journalists at Europarlament.
"Nuclear wastes will cause danger for thousand years. It's not justly to make future generation in Russia pay for the mistakes of mankind", - says Bellona.
"During the last 10 years Rosatom tries to make Russia an international dump of nuclear wastes. The problem of utilization of the nuclear wastes can't be solved by many countries for years, and the actions of the Russian government is a crime to its population ", - says Vladimir Slivyak.
Russian environmentalists are against import of nuclear waste in Russia and against all possible changes of the laws which can make it easer.
