A woman in a photo released by Toronto Police was identified Thursday as another ringleader of G20 marauders.
But while detectives believe the profile picture matches video images of a masked woman directing thugs to smash an undercover police vehicle, she remains unidentified.
The wanted woman, Det. Mike Carbonne appealed for the public to help identify, is for now known merely as “Unknown No. 17.”
The photo shows she wore a black toque, a large red bandana over her face and a skirt, said Carbonne, who is with the G20 investigative team.
“She ranks right up there, either co-ordinating the demonstration or assisting the Black Bloc protesters towards the undercover van,” Carbonne told the Sun.
No officers were present when black-clothed vandals damaged the van at University and Spadina Aves. under her direction, he said. Afterwards, the woman “was prancing around with an umbrella to block photographers.”
Before stripping off her disguise to blend into the protest crowd, she threatened to have a camera damaged unless the civilian photographer stopped filming, Carbone said.
Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux said most of the over 40,000 photos and 600 videos his team received came from civilians who responded to a police appeal.
Many have also given statements and volunteered to testify, he said.
A facial recognition specialist works with detectives who compare clothing, footwear, hair, glasses, jewelry, distinguishing marks, heights and weights in the images.
