Student body condemns G20 police actions

GUELPH — The University of Guelph’s Central Students’ Association has taken a stance against the tactics used by the Toronto Police Service and other police during the G20 summit.

“A lot of students felt they had been wronged and their rights had been violated,” said Demetria Jackson, the association’s communications and corporate affairs commissioner.

The association board passed a motion earlier this month taking a stance against police brutality, miscommunication about the Public Works Protection Act, spying on citizens and citizen groups without just cause and the use of violence in demonstrations except in self-defence.

“Students have a right to demonstrate without being intimidated,” Jackson said. “When you have a strong authoritarian force like that, it is very demeaning and very oppressive.”

Veronica Majewski, an association board member said she voted in favour of the motion because she was subjected to illegal searches and witnessed arbitrary detainments and arrests.

“I also found myself powerless to do anything about what I saw in Toronto, because over the course of the weekend hundreds of officers had removed the Velcro name tags and badge numbers from their bulletproof vests, making it impossible to attempt to report specific officers,” she wrote in an email.

“This is a wilful attempt to avoid individual accountability, and, to me, makes the entire police presence at the G20 responsible.”
