Huntsville fire chief reassigned after G8 security breach

The fire chief of the Ontario town slated to hold this summer's G8 leaders meeting has been temporarily reassigned to administrative work due to a security breach in preparations for the international summit.

Huntsville Fire Department chief Stephen Hernen, a 25-year veteran of the force, was relieved of his duties on Friday following an emergency town hall meeting, according to a statement issued by the central Ontario town. Media reports have suggested Hernen allegedly shared his G8 security pass with another firefighter.

Assistant fire chief Gary Monahan will take over from Hernen barely a month before the June 23-24 summit at Deerhurst Resort, which will attract such world leaders as U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

An estimated 4,000 RCMP officers will descend on Huntsville for security at the meeting.

Huntsville is about 200 kilometres north of Toronto, where the G20 meeting will be held June 26-27.
