Anarchists From British Colombia on tour in Europe 09

Some comrades from Vancouver Canada, are planning a Europe wide info tour from March to April. The goal of this tour is not only to spread information about an event or countersummit etc but rather our goal is to begin to share our plans, projects and selves within an international context. We wish to meet comrades face to face to discuss ongoing anarchist organising and share experiences.

By interacting with social struggles in other places we see that the project of social domination is global. All over the world capital aims to advance, restricting access to the means of survival, channeling populations into production and consumption, and refining methods of social control.Internationally, social control (i.e.: immigration systems, police, social welfare, labour, technology, prison) is experimented with and implemented differently. What is yesterday’s surveillance technology in London becomes today’s in Vancouver. Our proposed idea for this info tour is under the heading “Anarchists in British Columbia, Canada” We intend to talk about the main projects we have been involved with and initiatives we are trying to start. These include:

1. Anti-2010 Olypmics

-Mobilising, gathering funds, strategizing etc

The mobilisation against the 2010 Winter Olympics (staged in and around Vancouver, British Colombia) is a subject we want to talk at length about. The campaign against the Olympics has so far been diverse and determined with many sabotages and demonstrations taking place. We want to share the development of the campaign so far and our vision for the next two years with comrades from across Europe.

At this moment it seems unclear where this campaign and the many groups who fall under its banner are heading. If a counter event is organised we would like to talk about the necessary strategies and resources for a successful event.

2. Anarchist Organizing Space

Anarchists are currently attempting to set-up an Anarchist Organising Space. We are looking for inspiration, funds and resources????

3. John Graham

John Graham was arrested in 2003, in Vancouver. He is charged by the US government with the 1970’s murder of his friend and fellow warrior in the American Indian Movement, Anna Mae Aquash. John Graham is currently imprisoned at the Pennington County Jail in Rapid City, South Dakota, and his trial date has been set for May 12, 2009.

Aquash was found murdered execution style on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota in 1976, during the heat of a paramilitary campaign against radical and traditional native land defenders. We believe that the charges against John Graham are an attempt to cover-up the deadly counter-insurgency campaign waged by government agencies at Pine Ridge in the 1970s.

Vancouver anarchists first learned about the case from the local Native Youth Movement, mutual friends and John Graham’s family. We further educated ourselves, got to know John himself and talked with him about his history. Anarchists in Vancouver (and at times anarchists from other parts of British Columbia) have attended his court dates, visited him in prison, put on informational events on the case, put up posters, produced leaflets and supported events held for John Graham by the Native Youth Movement or his daughters. We’ve also supported indigenous warriors who’ve publicly challenged speakers spreading disinformation around the case.

Indigenous resistance to colonization is one of our primary sources of inspiration in our own anarchist struggle against industrialism, capitalism and the State. By standing in solidarity with John Graham we are strengthening our own struggle for freedom.

For us, solidarity with John Graham also means continuing on with the struggle against development, against uranium mining, against the police, against all prisons everywhere. As Anna Mae Pictou Aquash herself said after she was arrested and threatened by the FBI in September of 1975, “Jails are not a solution to problems.”

4. Native sovereignty

Local anarchists have been strengthening lines of communication with anarchist comrades in other parts of the province, and also initiating and maintaining contact with refugees and indigenous people who are resisting, in one form or another (hunger strikes, land reoccupations, etc.), the conditions imposed upon them by capital. Through this, comrades are slowly building the basis for projects of solidarity rooted in affinity rather than politics.

Our primary aim is to meet other comrades whom we share an affinity with in order to develop and strengthen each others respective projects for the generalization of the insurrectional clash.
