Anti-G8 protest gathers at summit city

L'AQUILA, Italy -- Hundreds of protesters are gathering in L'Aquila to march against the Group of Eight summit held in this quake-hit central Italian town.

Anti-globalization activists carrying red communist flags and wearing "No G-8" T-shirts were bused in from across Italy to set out from the L'Aquila suburb of Paganica.

They plan to march past villages nearly leveled by the April 6 earthquake and to end up at the entrance of the city's ruined historical center, which remains still largely off limits.

Organizers have pledged to march peacefully, but security remains tight in the area amid fears of violence. Activists have staged anti-summit protests and stunts in Rome, L'Aquila and other cities. The summit ends Friday.
