G8-TV: The alternative reporting of the G8 protests 2007 are now available on DVD

G8 TV

During the protests, demonstrations and blockades around Heiligendamm and Rostock the video website G8-TV provided up-to-date reporting to a wide counter publicity. All over the world people watched the live-broadcast and theindividual videoclips. The videoclips are now available on a double DVD.

In advance of the protests against the G8 summit the set-up of a video platform was a temporary focus of the German ‘Netzwerk Videoaktivismus’, a network of individuals and video collectives. In succession the website G8-TV (http://g8-tv.org/) was set up and was used by video activists from all over the world which were at the Baltic sea to report about the protests. G8-TV was a platform for themes and ideologies which are normally not covered by the mass media. During the protests from June 2nd. – 8th. 2007 G8-TV had about 40.000 visitors each day. Next to video direct view and a daily life broadcast the clips and broadcasts were offered as download as well. The double-DVD which is released now consists a selection of these clips in DVD quality and a data DVD containing the complete clip collection of G8-TV in a slightly lower quality. The videos are subtitled in up to 7 languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Dutch).

There are too many Bundeswehr vehicles

Worldwide people continually are trying to put military institutions and war equipment out of use, in Germany as well.

Sabotaged:

  • In February 2002 a bus of the Bundeswehr was put on fire in Glinde near Hamburg
  • In February 2003 some Jeeps of the Bundeswehr burned in Petershagen near Berlin after being set on fire by the “militant group”
  • In March 2004 the building of the Hako Company, involved in producing the Bundeswehr transport vehicle “Mungo” in Bad Oldesloe is set on fire by the “Working Group Origami – fold up armament projects”. At the same time other vehicles of the Bundeswehr parked in a Berlin subsidiary of the company were burned
  • In January 2006 a soldiers memorial in Munich is targeted in a colour attack by an “Autonomous Group”
  • In January 2007 the cars of two CEOs of the armaments company Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems in Hamburg burn, as “Revolutionary anti-militaristic activists” laid fire to them
  • In February 2007 the windows of the catholic military bishop were smashed, the home of a longstanding consultant of the Ministry of Defense is covered with colour by the “Autonomous Antimilitarists”
  • Almost sabotaged: In July 2007 the burning of three Bundeswehr-trucks on the areal of the armaments company MAN in Brandenburg failed. Since then three antimilitarists are in jail under section 129a. They have to be free.

Report: Media G8way International Press Group

Pressefoto

This report of our experiences as an international press group during the 2007 G8 protests is intended to inspire more people to do press work in the future, to try to counter the spin of the press industry of corporate capitalism to utilise the press. Just like summits, streets, neighbourhoods and workplaces, the press is a site of struggle. When blockading, our aim is to disrupt the summit, in the same way, we can understand press work as disrupting the story-telling of the powerful about how the world functions. Those with power constantly construct discourses to legitimise their power and their actions. One way they do this is to use the press. One way (of many others) we can challenge this is by doing so too. But of course the press is not a neutral arbiter in this struggle over meaning. Our intention was to embrace this discursive struggle to battle out the story through the press, rather than let it simply report the story of the battle on its own terms. Of course ‘the’ press is not a homogeneous entity and represents differentiated interests despite perhaps some common tendencies, at least within the corporate realm. This is why Indymedia and other activist press projects remain a core element of our movements. Our starting point was a recognition that we had to understand the interests press outlets have and how they function. These we aimed to challenge. Not simply to ‘bring the press on our side’ and influence them to report more ‘favourably’ about us, but to engage with, and enable others to engage with the challenge of productively using the press for our political aims. In this spirit we offer the below as a contribution to the ongoing debates about mediation, representation and press work that take place within our movements.

Observer: Jasper Gerard: oh so (not particularly) piquant

Hello,

Jasper Gerard’s supine admission that ‘protest is dead, but it’s somehow still so nice to see those superannuated anarchists blockading the G8’ (my summary of his piece, Observer 10.6.07) was extremely helpful. I only buy the Observer once in a foolish blue moon, and this time it was his piece that reminded me where the paper sits when it comes to actively standing up against injustice, social and climatic…unless of course it can be eased painlessly into one’s daily routine as part of a suddenly achingly hip, ‘ethical’ (but still ferociously commodifiable) lifestyle choice.

Thanks,

Mark Brown, London

Ah, look at those sweet German protesters

Germany doesn’t do retro-cool, for everything there remains vaguely in fashion long after other countries have consigned it to the back of the wardrobe. Witness its continued penchant for handlebar moustaches, the back catalogue of Sarah Brightman and international law. Or take all its anti-globalisation protesters at the G8. In Britain, anti-globalisers were big in the Nineties, but post 9/11 became last season. In a world of globalised terrorists, it seemed quaint to rail against globalised cafe lattes. It was not that anti-globalisers were proved entirely wrong, but rightly or wrongly, the debate galloped on. As Leonard Cohen sang: ‘Everybody knows the good guys lost.’

So national governments got on with squeezing what they could from multinationals, without scaring them offshore: unheroic, but the best that politics can do. Meanwhile, developing countries ‘exploited’ by globalisation boomed. Just as there was no alternative to the dark satanic mills, so to Starbucks: tax it and regulate it, then spend the dosh on something more worthwhile. Still, a warm wave of nostalgia washed over me as I realised there were still anti-globalising rioters out there, gobbing and clobbering most merrily, dressed as clowns – as period in their way as parasol-twirling maidens in a BBC costume drama.

The Gipfelsoli Infogroup...

...exists since the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001. After hundreds of protesters were arrested and mistreated, some having to endure weeks in prison, a support group formed in Berlin. When the support group ceased to exist, the Gipfelsoli Infogroup took on the administration of the email lists which disseminated relevant information for the evaluation of the Italian G8 and for continued solidarity work.

A second anchor of our work was Gothenburg: After confrontations during the EU summit a few weeks before the summit in Genoa, the police used fire arms against protesters. Courts imposed on average 2 year prison sentences. Exemplary was the conviction of members of a group that had used SMS to draw attention to police measures: they were sentenced to up to 4 years imprisonment. In Germany a few months later there were house searches and even charges in German courts relating to the events in Sweden.

The Infogroup published and distributed a regular newsletter with information about the court cases and the associated political conflicts. Together with others the Gipfelsoli Infogroup organised international legal support gatherings for people affected to help.

Gipfelsoli is a non-profit project.

Action kitchens in debt?

As opposed to various reports the financial result of the Anti G8 kitchens that they have broken even.

Due to a great willingness to donate money by people in the Anti G8 camps and on the blockades, there are even surpluses that can be donated to legal and prisoner support around the mobilisation.

According to a report in the tageszeitung (taz) on the 12th June 2007, the particpating kitchens are said to have suffered a loss of 15,000 euros. These numbers, however, are based on the temporary estimates of some kitchens at the last day of the camps, that can now, after many calculations, be definitely proven not to be the case from the kitchen finance co-ordinating group.

Report of Confrontations of 2nd June - G8

A report from someone that was in the first big demonstration in Rostock, that ended up in a violent confrontation with the police. A report about police repression, about protesters power and union, about the lies of the mainstream media and about the common will of thousands of people of closing G8.

What was supposed to be only a peaceful march (the first one) of all the people present, at the moment, in and around Rostock, quickly became a field battle.

The meeting point was the Rostock central train station. We already knew how difficult a protest could be because of the lack of places to do it. The ones that exist are not big enough for the thousands of people who want to protest against the aberrant G8 (witty police... or, at least, who organized the defence in this G8...), the camps are limited to a ridiculous number of people (knowing how much more are on their way), and the spaces that can hold demonstrations, protests and alike, are private property.
